Funding Criteria and Guidelines
LakeWood Regional Healthcare Foundation
The LakeWood Regional Healthcare Foundation was established in 1997 to pursue a $500,000 capital fundraising campaign for the design and development of a new hospital and care center facility to be attached to the existing health care facility. This campaign was the most ambitious public fundraising effort ever undertaken in the then 49-year history of CHI LakeWood Health and had the largest dollar goal sought by a not-for-profit organization in Lake of The Woods County.
LakeWood Regional Healthcare Foundation was created as a 501 c3 corporation, which ensured that all money raised by the community would stay in the community. Its mission is to ensure accessible, affordable healthcare and related services of the highest quality for all residents of Baudette, Lake of the Woods County and communities in the surrounding area.
Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) sponsors CHI LakeWood Health. The CHI Foundation supports the local growth of LakeWood Regional Healthcare Foundation and provides a central support center for foundation operational support. The size of CHI can attract government and national foundation dollars and CHI Foundation Executives work to grow a spirit of philanthropy locally.

Today, LakeWood Regional Healthcare Foundation actively purses grant opportunities to help better the facility and health related services in our area. The Foundation invests in programs and projects that improve the overall health and wellness of Lake of the Woods County. Our current funding initiatives address the priorities brought forth in the Community Health Needs Assessment conducted by CHI LakeWood Health. Our mission is to build a healthier community where we live, work and play.
Some of our projects and programs that are currently established include:
Adopt-A-Room Project:
The adopt-a-room project plans to update several patient rooms in the hospital with new flooring, furnishings, and cabinetry to create a pleasant and comfortable environment for patients and their family members. Input from the Foundation Board, LakeWood’s Patient Family Advisory Council and staff was used to create a design that will meet the needs of health care workers, patients and families. Funds have been raised through Foundation events , employee contributions and memorials.
LakeWood Care Center:
LakeWood Care Center is a licensed 44 bed skilled nursing facility located on the CHI LakeWood Health campus. Memorials can be made to the Foundation for care center use. Donors can request to purchase something specific or just ask that the funds be used for the Care Center’s greatest needs.
Ambulance:
Lake of the Woods ambulance service is a critical aspect of patient care for residents of Lake of the Woods County, as well as the adjoining counties of Beltrami and Koochiching. The goal of the ambulance service is to provide safe, comfortable and efficient transport of patients locally and to other facilities in the region. A few years ago the Foundation completed a capital campaign to raise funds for a new patient transport unit. Donations to the ambulance service can be made to the Foundation to help fund this important service.
Scholarship Program:
The plan is to award one scholarship each year from this fund to a Lake of the Woods High School graduate who is pursing a degree that focuses on health care or wellness. Several LakeWood staff members are currently participating by having bi-weekly payroll deductions given to this scholarship fund.
