Occupation refers to participating in meaningful daily activities, skills for the job of living. Occupational therapists focus on helping people of all ages regain or learn new skills to improve their ability to function as independently as possible.
Occupational therapists at LakeWood develop a personalized treatment approach for patients with conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, arthritis, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and low vision. Occupational therapy may focus on areas such as dressing skills, managing a checkbook, meal preparation, bathing safely and returning to driving after an injury or illness.
We provide specialized care for a wide variety of arm and hand injuries. Our therapists are trained in custom splint fabrication and modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation.
Walking may be difficult or impossible for some people. At times a wheelchair or other mobility device is necessary. Our occupational therapists perform wheelchair assessments to determine whether one would be appropriate and determine the features that would best meet your needs.
Our therapists assess and make recommendations for ways to modify environments and tasks to reduce and prevent injuries. Home safety evaluations may be done to assess an individual’s needs and make appropriate, safe and low-cost modifications. These interventions can help you remain in your home and function more independently.
If you or someone you know is having difficulty with everyday activities in their home or community, talk with your medical provider about a referral for occupational therapy. We’d like to help!
