We are driven by our values - Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence - and are committed to providing quality care.

Mission Statement

The mission of LakeWood Health Center and Catholic Health Initiatives is to nurture the healing ministry of the Church by bringing it new life, energy and viability in the 21st century. Fidelity to the Gospel urges us to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we move toward the creation of healthier communities.

Core Values

We are driven by our values - Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence - and are committed to providing quality care. These four Core Values are the basis of who we are and what we are. We believe so strongly in these values, that job descriptions, performance evaluations, the care provided, and decisions made reflect these four Core Values. We believe that in all we do, our works are done through a spirit of kindness and good will.

Reverence: A profound spirit of awe and respect for all of creation, shaping relationships to self, to one another and to God, and acknowledging that we hold in trust all that has been given to us.

Integrity: A moral wholeness, soundness, uprightness, honesty and sincerity as a basis of trustworthiness.

Compassion: A feeling of, being one with others in their sorrows and joys, rooted in the sense of solidarity as members of the human community.

Excellence: An outstanding achievement, merit, virtue, which continually surpasses standards to achieve/maintain quality.

About Us

LakeWood Health Center consists of the following three divisions: LakeWood Health Center, LakeWood Care Center, and LakeWood Nursing Service. They service a population of 6,000 to 9,000 people, the number fluctuating with seasonal tourism activities. LakeWood is a federally designated Critical Access Hospital.

As a Catholic non-profit organization, LakeWood Health Center is located in Baudette, Minnesota, and is owned and operated by Catholic Health Initiatives of Denver, Colorado. Our staff serve the social, health and welfare needs of the residents in Lake of the Woods County; contiguous counties, Koochiching, Beltrami, and Roseau; and neighboring Canada.

History

LakeWood Health Center opened in March 1950 as Baudette Community Hospital. It was owned by the community and operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph out of Crookston. The hospital was leased to the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1954 and in 1957 the Sisters purchased the hospital and changed the name to "Trinity Hospital".

In 1982, the Sisters entered into a management contract with United Health Resources of Grand Forks, North Dakota until they sold the hospital to Franciscan Sisters Health Care, Incorporated in 1985. During this time, Trinity Hospital took over management of the Pioneer Nursing Home, the long-term term care facility located one mile east of the hospital. In 1986, the hospital acquired the county-owned public health service. Trinity Hospital bought the Pioneer Nursing Home in 1990 and the name was changed to "LakeWood Health Center" to reflect the coming together of acute care, long-term care (LakeWood Care Center), and home health/public health (LakeWood Nursing Service) under one umbrella.

Catholic Health Corporation of Omaha, Nebraska took over sponsorship of LakeWood Health Center in 1993. Two years later they merged with two other large Catholic health care systems to form Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), our current sponsor, based in Denver, Colorado.

LakeWood Health Center completed a building and renovation project in 2000 that resulted in all health care services being available on one campus. The Care Center has since adopted the Eden Alternative approach to long-term care.

Spirituality & Religious Expression

We live out a spirituality that is deeply rooted in the values and cultural attributes of reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence. We demonstrate care for the whole person, not only in our relationships with one another but also in our health care delivery to patients and residents that is personalized, collaborative and comprehensive.

LakeWood is a health care provider sponsored by Catholic Health Initiatives. Together, CHI and LakeWood are a ministry of the Roman Catholic Church. Catholic faith is a vital part of the life of LakeWood including prayer, reflection, art, symbols, music and ceremonies.

There is no discrimination on the basis of religion. LakeWood does not attempt to convert employees or patients, residents, or clients. We ask that you be respectful if you prefer not to participate in any religious activities (observe as you would a guest).

Employees are encouraged to turn to their own faith as a source of strength. Also, as a base of encouragement and support, employees may pray, as they feel comfortable, with patients/residents/clients and if it is desired by those patients/residents/clients.

We encourage free expression of faith that is not coercive but supportive of the religious traditions of principles of CHI and the Catholic Church.
